Announcing the Gethin Thomas Memorial Award

1 August 2019

TAC (Teledwyr Annibynnol Cymru), the membership association of independent television producers in Wales, is delighted to announce that it will be sponsoring a competition new to the National Eisteddfod in 2020. The category is writing a comedy script, and TAC will support this to commemorate the late producer and comedian Gethin Thomas. A reception to launch the award will be held in the National Eisteddfod in Llanrwst next Wednesday 7 August in the Sinemaes teepee.

TAC members are offering a prize of £400 to the winner for a three-year cycle, and in addition, the winning script will be read by S4C and BBC Radio Cymru as well as Welsh theatre groups in order to explore development potential.

Gareth Williams, TAC Chair, said: “Gethin was a member of TAC Council for many years, and he is sadly missed. We as a Council wished to commemorate him in the field he worked tirelessly in throughout his career; Welsh comedy. He was also a strong advocate of mentoring and developing talent on television and behind the scenes, so it was important that this award reflected an element of continuity for the future.

“We are grateful to all the TAC members who have contributed to the award fund, and to S4C and Radio Cymru for their willing commitment to participate.ˮ

During the launch event, a panel of speakers will discuss different stages of Gethin’s life and career. They are: Elen Rhys, Entertainment Content Commissioner at S4C, Steffan Wiliam, a colleague and friend from the early days, and comedian Dan Thomas, who worked with Gethin more recently both on television series and comedy tours.
