TAC Tribute to Gwenda Griffith

24 May 2024

Our sector has suffered a great loss following the passing of a loyal supporter of our channel, pioneer of Welsh broadcasting, Gwenda Griffith. Brave, diligent and disciplined, that was Gwenda. There wasn’t a single line in a budget that she couldn’t justify. Not one word in a script that she hadn’t approved, and no garment that she had not chosen. She kept an eye on every detail, and her standards were her biggest motivation. She knew her audience. And she influenced many of us that had the privilege of working for her on Fflic.

I came to know her in my early days working for S4C. Firstly on a series about space – Concwest, then 72 Now You’re Talking programs and then 3 health education and sexual health series for the BBC. Always noble – no nonsense, extremely kind and supportive, and lots of fun after the shoot was over.

When I founded Telesgop she was the first to encourage and advise. And when I became Chair of TAC, a call from Gwenda would mean that she was upset about injustice or a lack of order, which affected us all – not just her company. She had a quiet wisdom, good judgement, and a completely original creativity.

To this day, when a problem arises, I ask myself quietly “I wonder what Gwenda would do in this situation?” For me she was a heroine, an example, a guide. I regret not saying these words to her before this week.
