Course content

  • What is copyright? Looking at the legal definitions. Which products / materials possess copyright? Who is the first copyright owner? How long does copyright entitlement last?
  • Do we as programme makers need to clear everything we include in our programmes, or are there examples of works being ‘in the public domain’?
  • What is the difference between a licence and assignment?
  • What do we mean by Clearances? What is ‘Chain of Title’?
  • How thorough should we investigate in order to use the ‘best endeavours’ argument?

Course trainer: Angharad Evans

Angharad will be familiar to most of you as S4C’s former Head of Legal and Business Affairs. She has a wealth of knowledge of all legal issues which can affect broadcast material including financial contracts, commissions, distribution rights, authors contracts, options as well as clearances and compliance issues.

Angharad started her legal career at Morgan Cole in Cardiff but later joined SJ Berwin in London in order to specialise in financing film productions. Since leaving S4C earlier this year, Angharad has been working as freelance solicitor and business advisor as well as a trainer / mentor.
