Producing Comedy Workshops: 17 September, 1 October and 15 October 2020

TAC is delighted to present a series of three workshops on different aspects of producing comedy led by Eddie Doyle, Elis James, Sioned Wiliam and Bedwyr Rees; well-known and influential names in the world of comedy in Wales and beyond. As well as sharing their wealth of experience, our guest speakers will be happy to answer your questions, as will Elen Rhys and Rhodri ap Dyfrig of S4C, who will also be present during the workshops.

The sessions are all held on Zoom from 10.00a.m. until 12.00p.m on the dates below. You will be be required to complete a written task after the second session, and you’ll receive specialist feedback to your work during the final session. We would kindly you to ensure that you can attend all three sessions before you register below, since places are limited. NB The sessions are held in Welsh except the Eddie Doyle masterclass.

Masterclass on Producing Comedy: Eddie Doyle, Head of Content Commissioning, BBC Northern Ireland 

What is comedy? Is it possible for a small country to produce comedy which is popular with a much wider audience? What are the latest comic trends?

Eddie Doyle: Eddie Doyle is BBC Northern Ireland’s Head of Content Commissioning. The role sees Eddie commission content across a range of genres including factual, entertainment, comedy, music and events. Prior to joining the BBC, Eddie was Head of Factual, Comedy, Talent Development and Music at RTÉ where he commissioned comedy, drama and entertainment programmes such as Mrs Brown’s BoysThe Young Offenders, and The Tommy Tiernan Show.

Comedy Essentials: Elis James and Sioned Wiliam  

An analysis of the various genres of comedy and the various platforms used, along with advice on how to produce successful comedy.

Elis James: Elis is one of the best known names of comedy in the UK, on TV, radio, the comedy circuit and podcasts. He works in both Welsh and English as a stand-up, actor, writer, TV and radio presenter. His work for S4C includes Cic lan yr Archif and Nabod y Teip and his work for BBC Wales includes Tourist Trap and Elis James: Funny Nation. Elis is also a regular contributor on  Russell Howard’s Good News, Live at the Comedy Store, Mock the Week and Eight out of Ten Cats. On radio, he has recently been one of the main contributors on Madam Mayor with Jack Dee and Harry Hill and Ankle Tag, both on Radio 4. 

 Sioned Wiliam: In 2015 Sioned Wiliam was appointed Commissioning Editor for Comedy, BBC Radio 4 and Radio 4 Extra, responsible for the overall development and editorial direction of Radio 4’s comedy output. Sioned was Controller of Comedy at ITV network between 1999 and 2006, and among her commissions were award-winning The Sketch Show and Cold Feet. Sioned started her comedy career as a member of the Oxford Revue, performing with Armando Iannucci, Rebecca Front and David Schneider. Over the years, she has worked with names like Jenny Eclair, Paul Merton, Steve Coogan, Nicholas Parsons, Jonathan Ross and Alexei Sayle.

Feedback and advice clinic: Sioned Wiliam and Bedwyr Rees

Feedback on the task set and advice and tips on how to pitch ideas for commissioning.

Bedwyr Rees: scriptwriter, author, editor and TV producer. Bedwyr started his career as a children’s presenter on S4C. Having always written in his spare time, it didn’t take long for Bedwyr to become a full-time writer. He produced the comedy series Gwlad yr Astra Gwyn, a series following Trefor and the people he ferried around in his taxi. The series won a Gold Medal in the Young People’s category of the Celtic Media Festival of 2013. He also won the Drama Medal at the National Eisteddfod in 2012. Bedwyr is now Executive Producer at Rondo Media Group, responsible for the drama series Rownd a Rownd. He has also written a number of novels and dramas for young people.
